Resume Tips
There are many ways of organizing a resume or curriculum vitae (CV). Our experience has proven that the chronological resume outlined below is the most suitable for presentation to companies we work with. It is also the format the majority of clients request.
Chronological Resume
A functional resume provides a general overview of the applicant’s expertise, and a brief listing of the companies for which the person has worked. However, the functional resume does not provide the level of detail required by our clients. Our clients prefer to review a candidate's work history chronologically. Therefore, we advise you to send us a resume outlining your work history in a chronological fashion, starting with the present, or more recent employment, with details of your skills and achievements under each place of employment.
Covering Letter
A covering letter is not required to apply to Specto. It is more important to have all relevant information within the resume itself. It is the resume that is presented to your potential employer, not the covering letter. However, if there are important conditions affecting your application, such as travel restrictions, relocation, or salary requirements, please include these in a brief covering letter.
Professional History
Without making your resume excessively lengthy, please ensure that you provide sufficient details about your professional history, particularly information relating to the job for which you are applying. Target your resume for the given position and answer questions set by the job description and requirements.
Layout
We prefer resumes in electronic format since this facilitates review and storage. The simpler the layout, the better will be the presentation. Please avoid headers, footers and tables. It is more convenient for us when your resume starts with your name without a header.
Contact Information
Please make sure your name, address and contact details, such as phone numbers and e-mail address where you can be reached confidentially, are listed at the top of your resume.
Job Search Objective
It is helpful to have a job search objective, but it is not a must.
Skills
You may provide a brief summary of your skills. However, it is more important for each skill to be mentioned within the context of the place of employment where it was used; in other words, particular/specialised skills which you feel you learnt or developed in particular jobs should be mentioned in the description of your chronological work history.
Work History
Please list specific positions with previous employers and/or project summaries. Your resume should comprise your work history. The latter consists of the names of the companies you worked for, the date, duration and titles of the jobs held. Be precise about the dates and avoid chronological gaps.
Most important, ensure that you include a description of your responsibilities at each work place. Provide details of your direct responsibilities, achievements, technologies used, including computer know how, and management duties, if any.
When describing each place of employment, please be specific about experiences directly relevant to the job you are applying for. Also, it would help the potential employer understand the environment you are coming from if you provide a brief, two sentence description of the companies where you worked, namely the industrial sector, product/service provided, and size.
Education & Achievements
Provide details of your educational background with dates, professional achievements/awards and additional skills, such as knowledge of foreign languages.
Personal Interests & Hobbies
It is not imperative to provide information about personal interests or hobbies, but this helps as it illustrates to the employer that you are a well-rounded person who has interests outside work.
Feedback
The suggested layout not only helps our clients but also ensures a fair assessment of your skills and experience, allowing us to screen and qualify you as a potential candidate for our clients.
After receiving your chronological resume, we will review it for the position applied and will contact you for further discussion, if your skills match the opportunity. If there is no immediate match, we will inform you and will keep your resume, in confidence, for consideration of future positions. |
